Tonight was Discovery Night at Presidio Middle School in San Francisco. Monica has been doing an internship with us for the past 8 weeks working on a project to show tonight. She decided to redesign the identity and collateral for the San Francisco Symphony as she is in an orchestra and enjoys music. After showing Monica how great identities are far more memorable and fun if they have a bit of wit to them or a second read such as the good old hidden arrow in the FedEx logo, she came up with a great solution – forming the ‘S’ and the ‘F’ for San Francisco out of musical instruments. She then carried the calligraphic style of the identity through onto posters, shopping bags, cups and T-shirts to create a beautiful system. We have really enjoyed working with Monica and the Spark team on such a worthwhile cause. We are extremely proud of Monica she is a very talented graphic designer already and wish her all the best for the future. I’m sure there would be a position for her at Dowling Duncan in another 10 – 15 years if she decides to pursue graphic design as her chosen career. Spark’s mission is to provide life-changing apprenticeships to youth in underserved communities across the United States. Spark operates summer and after-school programs that match students with apprenticeships in professions of their choice at local workplaces in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles.
