John Dowling
Newark (UK)

John has worked for some of the UK’s most respected design companies, beginning his career at innovative London studio Area, where he worked on projects for De Beers, Paul & Joe Boutique, SCP, Museum of Modern Art Oxford, Anton Corbijn and the V&A. In 1998 he joined internationally acclaimed agency Pentagram, working on accounts for clients such as Amanda Wakeley, King’s College London, British Friends of the Art Museums of Israel (BFAMI), Pantone and Hewlett Packard. Following a brief spell at Sea Design, John joined Frost Design in 2001, where he managed accounts for clients including Nike, Phaidon Press, Swiss Re, Serpentine Gallery and the first London Design Festival.

In 2003 he established Dowling Design & Art Direction, moving the studio from London to Newark the following year. He continues to work on a broad spectrum of projects for clients such as Robert Welch Designs, DCA Design International and Phaidon Press. John runs the Newark office of Dowling Duncan.

Widely published, John’s work has garnered awards from the Art Directors Club of New York, Design Week, the Cream Awards, the Tokyo Type Directors Club and D&AD, who awarded him a coveted yellow pencil. A former lecturer at the Lincoln School of Art & Design for over five years, he has given talks on graphic design and has sat on judging panels for Polaroid UK, The McNaughton Review and D&AD’s Professional and Student Award Schemes.

Rob Duncan
San Francisco & New York (US)

Rob’s distinguished career has seen him work with leading design companies on both sides of the Atlantic. He began his career at Mytton Williams in Bath, working on projects for Clarks Shoes, Arthur Anderson and Footprint Handbooks. In 2000 Rob joined Pentagram’s London office, where he worked with clients such as Egon Zehnder International, One&Only Resorts and The Waterways Trust. Taking full advantage of their international profile, he joined Pentagram’s San Francisco office in 2003. As senior designer he worked with a range of clients including Microsoft, San Francisco Opera and the AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts). In 2007 he joined Apple as an Art Director on their events and retail team, working on large graphics for events and promotional campaigns.

In 2008 he established his own studio, Rob Duncan Design. Based in San Francisco, he has built an impressive portfolio of work, with a range of projects for clients including Gap, Kodak, HP, Mars and Google. Rob runs the San Francisco and New York office of Dowling Duncan.

Rob’s work has been widely published in design press and books. He has also received awards from D&AD, the Scottish Design Awards, the Art Directors Club of New York, AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts), Graphis (including several Gold prizes), Communications Arts, and received a prestigious gold medal from the New York Festivals Award.

Rob is currently Education Chair for the San Francisco chapter of AIGA.

Matt Clare
San Francisco & New York (US)

Matt studied architecture at the University of Liverpool before attaining his Diploma in Architecture from the UK’s most renowned architecture school The Bartlett, University College London. He began his career at Apicella Associates working on a broad array of innovative interior, exhibition and event projects for clients including Virgin Atlantic Airlines, Pepsi, Volvo and The Science Museum, London.

In 1998 Matt moved with Apicella and his team to form the new architecture and environments group in Pentagram’s London office. Often working together with Pentagram’s leading graphic and product designers he worked on a wide range of corporate and public projects, for clients as diverse as Getty Images, Citibank, La Perla, Clear Channel and both the British and Natural History Museums in London. In 2006 Matt relocated to Pentagram’s San Francisco office as an Associate where he continued to work on a portfolio of diverse projects for clients including Harley-Davidson, Sonance, M&T Bank and The Dorchester Collection. Matt joined Dowling Duncan’s San Francisco office in 2011 as the architecture and environments partner. Taking a holistic approach to design he works on a wide variety of projects including branded environments, interiors, exhibitions and events.
