Today is an extremely sad day for the world and a devastating day for the design community. Steve was truly inspirational to every designer throughout the world. To quote Obama ‘He changed the way we see the world, he was bold enough to believe he could change the world and talented enough to do it’.

For all of those employees, past and present whether in Apple stores around the world or down the road at Infinite Loop it is especially sad. Those that worked alongside him or for him were and still are extremely proud to to be a part of the company that only he could build.

During my time at Apple I never had the opportunity to work directly with Steve or present to him (Luckily!) however I found myself stood behind him many a Monday at the Sushi bar waiting to be served. There was no special line jumping or privileges, he waited in line with the rest of us. I always wanted to tap him on the shoulder and introduce myself as employee 88513 but didn’t have the nerve. I wish I had now.

Tomorrow people will wake up early in San Francisco and catch the many commuter buses taking them down to Silicon Valley, or drive the beautiful 280 (when it’s not raining), and the day will be the same, but even tonight in San Francisco it feels like there is something missing and not quite right. A sense that those who work in Silicon Valley will be feeling tomorrow and for a long time to come.

Today Silicon Valley has truly lost it’s Icon and it will be interesting to see if it will ever feel like it did in the days when Steve was around. The world will miss you Steve, but let’s face it Heaven is going to start looking a lot cooler now!
